(San Francisco) - USF women's survived a late Southern Illinois rally and took a 67-60 non-conference victory in the first round of the 2006 odwalla Classic Friday night at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (2-3) take on Delaware in the title game of the tournament Saturday at 7:00 PM. The Blue Hens (3-1) upset No. 20 Kentucky in the first game to advance to Saturday's nightcap. The Wildcats (2-2) will take on the Salukis (1-3) at 5:00 PM.
Junior guard Dominique Carter led the way for the Dons with a game-high 24 points on 10-of-15 from the field to go along with six rebounds and a pair of assists in 36 minutes. Carter scored 14 points after intermission. Junior center Lisa Olden added 13 points, while senior forward Nickie Warren rounded out the double-figure scorers with 11.
San Francisco took a 29-18 lead into the locker room at halftime after converting on .500 (12-24) from the field and limited SIU to .429 (9-21). The Dons increased its lead to 12 points at 40-28 before the Salukis went on a 16-2 outburst, taking a 44-42 advantage with 9:32 on the clock. It turned out to be SIU's last lead of the game, as the Dons broke a 46-46 tie with 7:56 left and seized a 10-point lead, 64-54 with 2:08 remaining on a bucket by senior center Breann Sitton.
USF shot at a .511 (24-47) rate for the game, while SIU managed a .488 (21-43) clip. Both teams were ice cold from 3-point range converting on a combined 3-for-18, but made up for it at the stripe as the Dons connected at a .818 (18-22) while the Salukis hit at a .889 (16-18) rate.
Senior forward Carlai Moore led SIU with 14 points, while junior guard Debbie Burris added 11 points.
