ATLANTA -- Gonzaga University women's basketball senior Kayla Standish has been named to the Naismith Trophy preseason watch list, announced Wednesday. She is the third player in Gonzaga school history to be named to the prestigious list as Heather Bowman and Courtney Vandersloot made the list during their tenure.
The watch list includes the top women's college basketball players from 35 schools around the country, and was compiled by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, which based its criteria on player performances from the previous year and the expectations for the 2012 college basketball season. The 2012 Naismith Trophy will be awarded at the NCAA Women's Final Four in Denver.
Standish, a forward from Ellensburg, Wash., closed out her junior campaign averaging 17.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game while shooting 56.0 percent from the field. She was named All-West Coast Conference and WCC All-Tournament.
Standish has started the 2011-12 campaign strong, scoring 20-plus points in three of four contests. She leads the team at 18.8 points per game; is second in rebounds and steals per game at 4.5 and 2.5, respectively.
In late February, the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors will compile a mid-season team of the top 30 players in the nation. Then in March, the Naismith Trophy voting academy will vote to narrow the list to the four finalists.
