WCC Women's Basketball Set to Open 2013-14 League Schedule

SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference kicks off the 2013-14 WCC schedule Saturday, Dec. 28. The WCC posted a 69-41 non-conference record (62.7%) and the top four teams in the league standings own a combined slate of 41-4 (91.1%). San Diego is the lone unbeaten team, entering the week with an unblemished 11-0 records, while BYU (10-1) and Saint Mary’s (10-1) both have a solitary loss more than a month into the season.


  • Through December 22, WCC teams own a 62.7% winning percentage vs. non-conference foes, including a 42-15 (73.7%) rate on their home floors. See page 2 for more.
  • WCC Teams rate in the top-25 among NCAA DI leaders in several categories: Assist/Turnover ratio - Gonzaga (20th/1.26); Assists - BYU (16th/18.6); Blocks - BYU (6th/6.2); Field Goal % - Saint Mary's (14th/47.8); Free Throw % - Saint Mary’s (24th/75.7); 3P Field Goal % - Saint Mary’s (5th/43.1), BYU (24th/37.7); Scoring - Saint Mary’s (18th/82.6); Steals - Gonzaga (21st/11.3); Scoring Defense - San Diego (12th/54.7), Gonzaga (16th/55.1).   • BYU’s Jennifer Hamson is third among Division I blocked shots leaders (4.0) and is 19th in field goal % (59.8); Saint Mary’s Danielle Mauldin (6th/8) and BYU’s Jennifer Hamson (12th/8) and Pacific’s Kendall Kenyon (12th/8) rank in the top-10 in double-doubles; Gonzaga’s Jazmine Redmon is 8th in assist/turnover ratio (3.73); Saint Mary’s Jackie Nared is 21st in scoring (21.8); Saint Mary’s Danielle Mauldin is third in rebounds (13.7); Pacific’s Kendall Kenyon is 23rd in rebounds (11.0);  Gonzaga’s Haiden Palmer is seventh in steals (3.33) and Pacific’s KiKi Moore is 19th in steals (3.0); BYU’s Kim Beeston is 20th in 3-pointers (3.18) and 3-point field goal % (46.7); Saint Mary’s Lauren Nicholson in fourth in 3P FG% (53.1).   • Four WCC teams - Gonzaga (1), San Diego (2), BYU (3) and Saint Mary’s (6)  - cracked this week’s mid-major top-25 poll as released by College Basketball Insiders.
  • Three WCC teams - Gonzaga (13), San Diego (18) and Saint Mary’s (33) cracked the top-50 in RPI ratings.
  • The WCC ranks fourth nationally in rebounding (42.78).

The West Coast Conference posted a strong non-conference resume.

  • The WCC posted winning records against three “power” conferences: the ACC (2-1), Big East (2-0), Big-10 (2-0).
  • The WCC went .500 (8-8) against the Pac-12 in 2013-14 and six schools collected at least one victory against a league member. BYU and Saint Mary’s each collected two victories vs. the Pac-12.
  • The WCC also turned in solid showings against the Mountain West (11-9), the Big West (14-11), the Big Sky (10-3) and the WAC (7-3).
  • The WCC did not post a losing record against a conference it played at least four games. 

WCC Closes Non-Conference Strong
The West Coast Conference closed non-conference play with a flourish posting  a combined record of 11-4 in the final eight days of non-league contests, including a perfect 6-0 slate Dec. 21 - the final day before the start of WCC action.

The WCC continues to rate in the top-six among Division I conferences in national trends as of Dec. 22.
Scoring: 6th (73.21 ppg)
Rebounds: 4th (42.78 rpg)
3-Point Field Goal Percentage: 6th (32.92)
