MEDICAL LAKE, Wash. - Gonzaga University women's crew had a solid showing in its first home regatta of the season finishing second during the varsity 8+ race in a three school event held Saturday morning at Silver Lake. Early morning racing had crews going into a 5 mph head wind which increased throughout the morning with the varsity race going into a 10 mph head wind with a slight chop on the water. A slight rain fell over the duration of the racing schedule.
In the varsity race, Washington State University used a steady pace over the 2,000 meter course to slowly pull away for the 10-second win over Gonzaga. The Cougars finished in a time of 7:14.47 with Gonzaga charging past the University of British Columbia to finish in second place. Gonzaga rowed a time of 7:24.79 with UBC closing at 7:28.63. The Cougars were rated No. 19 in the latest rowing poll entering this weekend's regatta.
In the junior varsity race, Washington State again commanded the race and easily pulled away from the other two competitors to finish at 7:12.83, the fastest time of the day. Simon Fraser University and Gonzaga rowed neck-and-neck until SFU edged the Bulldogs in the last 100 meters to finish second at 7:38.35. GU was third at 7:39.79.
WSU won both the varsity 4+ and junior varsity 4+ with times of 8:22.16 in the varsity 4+ and 8:28.9 in the junior varsity 4+. Gonzaga was fourth in the varsity 4+ with a time of 9:01.8 and did not enter a boat in the junior varsity 4+.
The Bulldogs did fare well in both novice 8+ races winning but events. In the top novice race, Gonzaga pulled away early from the WSU boat and cruised to a time of 7:22.66, an 18-second victory over Washington State which crossed at 7:40.35. UBC and SFU rowed a combined novice 8+ which finished third. The second Gonzaga novice boat also posted a large victory winning by 17 seconds over WSU with a time of 8:17.45.
Gonzaga will return to action next weekend when they compete at the NCRC Invitational in Vancouver, Wash.
