Women's Crew Moves On To Knecht Cup Grand Final

April 8, 2006

CAMDEN, NJ - For the second straight year the Gonzaga University women's varsity crew had advanced to the Grand Final of the Knecht Cup hosted by Villanova University on the Cooper River in Camden, NJ. Gonzaga placed fifth in last year's Grand Final while Massachusetts won the event.

All five early morning heats were plagued by wind and rain which forced the course to be shortened to roughly 1,900 meters. Each heat was done with a floating start. Practicing in similar conditions most of the spring season, Gonzaga's varsity 8+ was prepared and rowed a time of 6:18.4 to hold off Villanova by one second and win the heat race. Colgate was third followed by George Mason and Lehigh.

Conditions improved for the afternoon semifinals with all races being moved back to the 2,000 meter distance. Gonzaga won its semifinal heat by five seconds over Connecticut as both schools advanced to Sunday's Grand Final. Gonzaga posted a time of 7:17.9 with UConn closing at 7:22.8. Dayton was third one second behind UConn with Delaware, Holy Cross and West Virginia rounding out the semifinal finishing order.

Also advancing to Sunday's Grand Final by placing first or second in the other two heat races were Massachusetts, Marist, Buffalo and Villanova.
