May 7, 2005

SEATTLE - Gonzaga University novice crews picked up a first and second place finish on Saturday morning at the annual Opening Day Regatta at Montlake Cut in Seattle marking the best combined finish for Bulldogs men's and women's novice crews at the event.

Gonzaga shocked the host University of Washington Huskies as the Bulldogs made one final push to collect a one-second margin and win the women's novice 8+ in a five-boat field. Gonzaga rowed a time of 6:57.61 with UW's top boat right behind at 6:58.61. Washington State University was third six-seconds behind Gonzaga, followed by Western Washington University and Washington's second novice 8+.

Gonzaga's freshmen 8+ also faired well as the boat was rowing together for only the second time this spring. Gonzaga chased Washington down the 2,000 meter course but was six-seconds behind the Huskies with Western Washington coming in third. UW rowed a time of 6:08.77 with the Bulldogs crossing in 6:14.02.

Gonzaga's varsity women's 8+ will compete next Sunday at the Pacific-10 Conference championships in Sacramento while the women's varsity 4+ will compete in Saturday's PCRC championships, also in Sacramento.

The Gonzaga men are still waiting to hear if they will be invited to the IRA National Championships held in early June in Camden, N.J. Bids to the IRA's are extended near the last week in May.
