Junior All-American Eileen Vargas carded an opening-round 1-under par 70 on Monday to grab the first-round lead and help No. 6 Pepperdine to a first-place showing after 18 holes of the 13-team Santa Clara Colby Invitational that is being held at the Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel Valley, California.
The Waves, who hold four of the Top 5 positions, are at 5-over par 289 and 18 shots in front of host Santa Clara, which posted an opening-round score of 23-over par 307. UC Riverside (313) is third, followed by Cal State Northridge (322) and Sacramento State and Portland, who are tied for fifth at 43-over par 327.
Pepperdine senior All-American Carolina Llano shot a 1-over par 72 and is tied with Santa Clara's Megan Stoddart for second, while sophomores Leanne Bowditch (73) and Marina Choi (74) are fourth and fifth, respectively.
Freshman Nicole Montgomery, who is playing as an individual, is tied for sixth after shooting a 4-over 75. Senior Courtney Clark (77) and sophomore Stephanie Gelleni, who also are playing as individuals, are tied for ninth and 15th, respectively.
Sophomore Jayvie Agojo shot a first-round 80 and is tied for 22nd.
The final round of the 36-hole tournament will be played on Tuesday beginning at 7:30 a.m.
