Malibu, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Pepperdine women's golf team, behind individual medalist Eileen Vargas, captured the Santa Clara Colby Invitational Tuesday afternoon at the Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel Valley, California, and in the process gave 13th-year head coach Laurie Gibbs her 25th career tournament victory.
The Waves, who won their third tournament of the 2005-06 campaign, totaled a 36-hole score of 17-over par 589 to out-distance the 13-team field. UC Riverside (632) placed second and was followed by host Santa Clara (634), Sacramento State (647) and Wyoming (650).
"I was pleased with the effort and performance of our team over the last two days," Gibbs said. "They performed well through tough weather conditions and I was happy that all eight members of the team were able to compete this week."
Vargas carded an even-par score of 143 to finish seven shots in front of teammate Marina Choi, who posted a 7-over par total of 150. It was Vargas' second tournament win of the season as she opened her junior campaign with a victory at the Branch Law Dick McGuire Invitational.
Pepperdine captured seven of the Top 10 finishes. Senior All-American Carolina Llano and sophomore Leanne Bowditch tied for third at 8-over 151. Senior Courtney Clark (152) tied for fifth with Santa Clara's Megan Stoddart and freshman Jayvie Agojo (153) was seventh.
Freshman Nicole Montgomery tied for 12th with an 11-over par 154 total. Montgomery had the shot of the tournament as she recorded a hole-in-one on the par-3 151-yard seventh hole with a 5-iron.
Montgomery's hole-in-one was the first for a Pepperdine player in tournament competition since Llano aced the par-3 15th hole during the 2003 NCAA Fall Preview Tournament in Auburn, Alabama.
Sophomore Stephanie Gelleni tied for 14th with a 15-over par score of 158.
Pepperdine is next in action beginning March 31 when it opens play at the PING Arizona State Invitational at the Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Arizona.
