Junior All-American Eileen Vargas carded a 3-under par 69 on Friday and is tied for third place after the opening round of the PING / Arizona State Invitational that is being played at the par-72, 6,230-yard Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Arizona.
Vargas is three shots off the lead that is held by Arizona State's Tiffany Tawee, who shot a 6-under par 66 and holds a two-shot advantage over Cane Hines of Texas. Vargas and Arizona's Adrianna Zwanck are tied for third while Ashley Knoll of Texas A&M and UNLV's Eleana Kurokawa are tied for fifth with 2-under par 70s.
Host Arizona State leads the team standings following 18 holes of play with a 5-under score 283. The Sun Devils were the only team to shoot under par on the day and are five shots in front of second-place UCLA, who carded an even-par round of 288. UNLV (290) is third followed by Pepperdine (292) and Tulsa, which rounds out the top five with a 5-over par score of 293.
