LOMPOC, Calif. - Gonzaga University's women's golf team battled from last place after Monday's 36 holes to shoot a final-round 317 on Tuesday and claim third place in the 11th annual West Coast Conference Championship at La Purisima Golf Course.
Mary Kate Morgan, ninth heading into Tuesday's final round, fired a 77 over the 6,069-yard, par-72 layout to finish sixth at 233 and earn her second straight All-WCC first-team honor, the inaugural two-time first-team honoree in Gonzaga's WCC history. She finished tied for third last season to equal the best Gonzaga individual finish.
The Bulldogs trailed the University of Portland by three shots and Santa Clara University by eight strokes after 36 holes, but the Bulldogs passed both of them with Tuesday's 317 to finish one stroke ahead of SCU and four shots ahead of Portland. Gonzaga matched its best finish in WCC Championship play, the 2003 squad finishing alone in third place and the 1998 club knotting for third.
Pepperdine University easily captured its sixth straight WCC crown with a 54-hole total of 909 for a 21-stroke victory over the University of San Francisco. The Waves Misun Chin claimed medalist honors with a 222 for a 1-shot victory over teammate Eileen Vargas. Defending champion Jayvie Agojo of the Waves finished ninth at 236.
