Pepperdine junior Eileen Vargas carded a 1-under par 71 on Wednesday and extended her lead after two rounds of the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships that are taking place at the par-72, 6,203-yard Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
Vargas, the only player in the field to shoot below par in each round, has a 36-hole total of 5-under par 139 and holds a four-shot lead over Arizona State's Jennifer Osborn. Florida's Tiffany Chudy and Tennessee's Violeta Retamoza are tied for third with even-par scores of 144. Four players are knotted for fifth place with 1-over par totals of 145.
The Waves knocked six shots off their opening round and moved up six spots in the standings are tied with Purdue for fifth place with a 20-over par total of 596, 10-shots off the pace being set by Arizona State. The Sun Devils posted 6-over par 294 to overtake first-round leader USC.
Pepperdine registered the fourth-lowest round of the day, carding a 7-over par 295.
USC (591) is third followed by Tennessee, which turned in the low round of the day. The Volunteers shot a 2-over par 290 are at 17-over par 593.
Third-round action gets underway at 5 a.m. (PDT). Pepperdine is scheduled to begin teeing off at 9:30 a.m. (PDT) and will be grouped with Purdue and Tennessee.
