No. 20 Pepperdine Leads After Opening Round of 2015 WCC Championships

SOMIS, Calif. -- No. 20 Pepperdine finds itself in a familiar position after the opening round of the 2015 West Coast Conference Championship at Saticoy Country Club. The Waves own a six-stroke lead heading into Tuesday's second round action, paced by individual leader, junior Marissa Chow (+2).

After trailing early to No. 50 Gonzaga, Pepperdine surged late to take the top spot on the team leader board. The Waves are looking for their 14th consecutive WCC title. Pepperdine shot a 311 on the challenging par-72 course. The Bulldogs are at 317 and San Francisco is at 318. BYU (324) and Santa Clara (325) round out the field.

Pepperdine, Gonzaga and USF will tee off from No. 10 beginning at 9:15 a.m. for Tuesday's second round. The Cougars and Broncos go off No. 10 starting at 8:20 a.m.

Chow carded a 2-over 74 that included three birdies, joining teammates freshman Katherine Zhu, tied for fifth place at 78, and freshman Tatiana Wijaya tied for ninth at 79 in the top-10.

Ashley Noda of Santa Clara is second at 76, San Francisco's Emelie Lundstrom and Gonzaga's Han Wu are tied for third at 77. San Francisco's Ayaka Suzuki, Zhu, BYU's Alex White and defending WCC medalist Gonzaga's Alice Kim are in a logjam for fifth place at 78.

The tournament concludes with the third round on Wednesday. Pepperdine has won 16 of the 18 WCC Championships ever contested.
