Pepperdine Women's Golf Season Ends at NCAA Regional

May 10, 2008

AUSTIN, Texas - The Pepperdine women's golf team had its best performance of the NCAA Central Regional during Saturday's third and final round, but the Waves' season came to an end at the University of Texas Golf Club after a 12th-place finish.

The Waves shot a 299, which allowed them to move up three spots in the final standings after starting the day in 15th place. But only the top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championships, and Pepperdine finished at 911 (304-308-299), nine strokes behind the eighth-place team.

Two Waves finished in the top 20, as junior Jayvie Agojo (Bangkal, Philippines) and senior Leanne Bowditch (Peregian, Australia) each tied for 19th place with a 6-over 222. Agojo (75-74-73) got one stroke better each day and was just 1-over during Saturday's final round after recording three birdies. Bowditch (72-78-72) posted her second even-par round for the tournament on Saturday. She began the round with three straight bogies but was outstanding the rest of the way, posting birdies on the sixth, 11th and 13th holes to get back to par.

For the first time this season, freshman Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz.) wasn't the team's top scorer. She finished in a tie for 47th place at 229 (76-77-76), while freshman Martine de Gannes (Diego Martin, Trinidad) tied for 81st at 239 (81-80-78) and senior Stephanie Gelleni (Caracas, Venezuela) tied for 98th at 247 (86-79-82).

Pepperdine was aiming for its ninth NCAA Championships appearance in 10 years, but will give it another shot next season with a young, promising squad. Bowditch and Gelleni graduate, but Agojo, Karle and de Gannes will be joined by one of the nation's best recruiting classes that contains five of the top players in junior golf.
