WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Pepperdine women's golf team's 10th trip to the NCAA Championships resulted in a tie for 14th place as the four-round event concluded on Friday.
Pepperdine tied with South Carolina and had a final total of 1186 (297-306-288-295). Though the Waves were denied the top 10 finish they were hoping for, Pepperdine Coach Laurie Gibbs was pleased with her team's effort.
"It was a really good showing," said Gibbs, who has led Pepperdine to eight top 10 finishes and 10 NCAA Championships berths in the last 12 years. "We were shooting for the top 10, but it was hard to recover from the second round. There were really tough conditions that day, we got pulled off the course a couple of times, and had to count a high score. We knew it would be difficult to creep back into the top 10, but we fought back and had a great third round. All in all, 14th was a pretty solid result."
Purdue won the NCAA title at the par-72 Country Club of Landfall, beating USC by one stroke.
Leading the Waves for the tournament was freshman Danielle Kang (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake HS), who was appearing in just her sixth collegiate event. She finished in a tie for 15th place with a 1-over 289 (74-73-69-73). Her final round included two birdies and three bogies. Kang's score of 1-over for the tournament tied the second-best score relative to par ever recorded by a Pepperdine player at the NCAA Championships.
Sophomore Jessica Wallace (Langley, B.C., Canada/Walnut Grove Secondary) also had a very good showing, tying for 21st place with a 4-over 292 (78-72-68-74). Wallace had tied for 39th at the 2009 NCAA Championships and improved considerably this year.
Sophomore Lisa McCloskey (Montgomery, Texas) moved up more than 20 spots thanks to a final-round score of an even-par 72, as she tied for 61st place at 300 (74-77-77-72). She had the best round of the day for the Waves and it included four birdies.
Sophomore Kaitlin Drolson (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) tied for 112th place at 311 (76-84-75-76) and junior Taylore Karle (Scottsdale, Ariz./Laurel Springs Academy) tied for 118th place at 315 (73-86-76-80). Drolson recorded an eagle on the par-5 12th hole today.
