Columbus, Ohio - Pepperdine junior Eileen Vargas carded a 4-under par 68 and is atop the leaderboard after the first round of the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships that opened Tuesday at the par-72, 6,203-yard Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.
Vargas helped Pepperdine to an opening-round 13-over par 301, good enough for a tie for ninth place after 18 holes. USC is the first-round leader after opening with a 3-over total of 291 and has a one-shot lead over second-place Arizona State.
Vargas holds a one-stroke advantage over Florida's Tiffany Chudy. Arizona State's Jennifer Osborn is third after shooting a 2-under 70 and three players are tied for fourth 1-under par scores of 71.
Following USC and Arizona State in the team standings is Florida, which carded a first-round score of 5-over 293. Arizona (296) is fourth while Wake Forest and defending national champion Duke tied for fifth with 9-over par scores of 297.
Second-round action continues on Wednesday with Pepperdine scheduled to tee-off at 5 a.m. (PDT) and is grouped with California and Washington. All the action can be followed live on the Internet at www.golfstat.com.
