Pepperdine Junior Eileen Vargas Named Second Team All-American

May 28, 2006

Columbus, Ohio - Junior Eileen Vargas, who helped lead the Pepperdine women's golf team to a third place showing at the 2006 NCAA Division I Championships this past week, was tabbed a second team All-American by the National Golf Coaches Association, it was announced Friday evening.

Vargas, who earned honorable mention All-American recognition in 2005, led the Waves with a career-best 72.83 stroke average in 30 rounds. She posted 10 Top 20 finishes, including eight Top 10s.

The Pepperdine junior, who led the NCAA Championships through the first three rounds, finished tied for fourth with a 3-over par total of 291. Vargas opened her 2005-06 campaign with a first-place showing at the Branch Law / Dick McGuire Invitational in September and claimed individual medalist honors at the Santa Clara Colby Invitational earlier this spring.

Vargas' second team selection marks the 12th All-American selection for a Pepperdine women's golfer. In addition to Vargas, other Waves to earn All-American accolades include Tamie Durdin (2000), Lindsey Wright (2000-2003), Katherine Hull (2001-03) and Carolina Llano (2004, 2005).
