LA HABRA HEIGHTS, Calif. - University of Portland head women's golf coach Michelle Murphy has earned a spot in the 2006 U.S. Women's Open by shooting a 148 in sectional qualifying held at Hacienda Golf Club on June 12. Murphy, a member of the LPGA Tour in 1998, 2000 and 2001, will make her ninth career U.S. Open appearance. The tournament will be played June 29-July 2 at Newport (R.I.) Country Club.
Murphy earned one of the 84 spaces available to qualifiers among the 156-player field. She was one of ten qualifiers from the Hacienda GC sectional. Amie Cochran (Torrance, Calif.) was the top finisher at Hacienda with a 2-under 142. Three players came in at 2-over 146, while Murphy was joined at 148 by Joanne Lee (San Carlos, Calif.).
A native of Tacoma, Wash., Murphy graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1990 and has had prominent success professionally since. She accepted the head coaching position at Portland in August of 2004 and is set to begin her third season with the Pilots this fall.
