VILLAGE OF PINEHURST, N.C. - Gonzaga University senior Mary Kate Morgan lost in her first round of match play at the 106th North and South Women's Amateur Championship at historic Pinehurst on Wednesday, falling 4 and 2 to Jeehae Lee of Newhaven, Conn.
Morgan, seeded 28th heading into match play, fell to the 37th-seeded Lee, who will now face fifth seed Stacey Lewis of The Woodlands, Texas. Lewis defeated 60th seed Mandi McDonnell of Grand Blanc, Mich., on Wednesday.
This is the second year Morgan has competed in the event, failing to qualify for match play this year but shooting 150 in two rounds of qualifying this year to tie for 26th. She was seeded 28th after tie-breaker procedures.
Participants for the event were selected by invitation, the field determined based upon a potential contestant's playing reputation as well as performance in national amateur championships and overall competitive record. The maximum field is 156 contestants.
