USF's Jessica Potter Claims 2006 Canadian Women's Amateur Crown

Aug. 4, 2006

(Riverview, New Brunswick) - University of San Francisco junior Jessica Potter (Coquitlam, B.C., Canada) emerged victorious after a one hole playoff at the Royale Cup National Canadian Amateur Championship held at Moncton Golf and Country Club today. Potter fired a final round 73 to hold off the late charging Veronique Drouin of Quebec. Drouin's two-under 69 matched Potter's 72-hole total of 4 over 288 (73, 71, 71, 73).

Sudden death playoff was short lived with the Coquitlam, B.C. native finishing off a short putt to seal the victory. Playoffs are nothing new to Potter as she went 1-1 in extra holes this spring for USF, the win coming at The University of Oregon Duck Invitational.

"It was a calming feeling in the playoff, knowing I had been in that situation before," Potter said. "I just tried to execute each shot one at a time and I tried not to be too attached to winning or losing."

Potter celebrated her 20th birthday in style Thursday firing an even-par 71 during third round action. The 71 gave her a one stroke advantage going into today's final round. The win will give Potter an exemption into the 2007 CN Canadian Women's Open, a regular stop on the LPGA Tour, to be held at Royal Mayfair Golf and Country Club in Edmonton, Alberta. The tournament will be held August 13-19. The win will also likely earn her a birth on the Canadian National Amateur Team.

"It was great to give myself such an exciting birthday present," Potter said. "It is all just starting to sink in and I am already excited to play in next year's Canadian Open. I have also been eyeing a spot on the National Team for a long time. It has been an amazing week."

Past winners of the Canadian Women's Amateur Championship include LPGA Tour winners Dawn Coe-Jones and A.J. Eathorne.

"I was a little overwhelmed at the awards ceremony when I saw the names of the pastchampions on the trophy. It will be very special to have my name beside theirs," Potter remarked.

Potter enjoyed an outstanding spring season for the Dons in 2006 as a sophomore, posting four top-five finishes during the spring capped by qualifying for the 2006 NCAA Regional as an individual.

USF Women's Golf Coach, Josh Cupp, was fortunate enough to receive a call from Potter not long after the trophy presentation.

"I absolutely could not be more proud of Jess," Cupp said. "She has worked so hard on all aspects of her game. I could almost hear the smile on her face over the phone and I was thrilled that she thought to call me on such an amazing day for her. I truly think this is just the tip of the iceberg for Jess and it is fun to see her begin to realize how good she actually is."

USF women's golf opens the 2006-07 season September 11th at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico.
