Sept. 22, 2006

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University will host the 2006 Inland Empire Women's Intercollegiate golf tournament Monday and Tuesday at Hangman Valley Golf Course.

Eight other teams will join the Bulldogs for the 54-hole affair that begins at 9 a.m. Monday with a shotgun starts. Golfers will play 36 holes Monday, with the final round of 18 holes scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

The course will be a par 72, 6,150-yard layout.

"We're excited to host this event," Gonzaga head coach Robert Gray said. "This is the first time since 2003 we've hosted so we're looking forward to be able to showcase collegiate golf in Spokane."

In addition to Gonzaga the field will include Eastern Washington University, University of Idaho, University of Portland, UC Riverside, University of Montana, Montana State University, North Dakota State University and the University of British Columbia.

Gonzaga has played two fall tournaments - the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic hosted by Colorado State University to open the fall season and last Monday and Tuesday at the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational hosted by Oregon State University.

"We need a good outing," Gray said. "We've struggled a little bit early in the season and we have too veteran of a team to be posting some of the numbers we've been putting up."

The Bulldog veterans are seniors Mary Kate Morgan and Jennifer Swanson. They are joined by juniors Sarah Sheffield and Lacey Jo Manwaring. Sophomores Lauren Phillips and Elizabeth Jarrett have also seen action this season, while sophomore Katie Gumke and freshman Anna Friedhoff have yet to compete early in the season.

"I think we have the makings of a solid team," Gray said.
