CORVALLIS, Ore. - Freshman Paige Rachor closed with a 76 and placed 52nd overall as the Portland Pilots women golf team finished 16th at the Oregon State Invitational at Trysting Tree Golf Club on Tuesday. Rachor's three-round total of 235 was the low-score for the Pilots, who totaled 954 as a team at the season-opening tournament. UP improved each round, culminating with a final round team score of 310.
"I'm happy with the way we improved and I'm looking forward to improving even more at our next tournament," Portland head coach Michelle Murphy said. "Our biggest challenge we'll face this year is getting in our own way. As soon as we realize that we don't have to hit it perfectly every time and we don't have to hit every green in regulation, we'll see a big improvement in our game. Paige Rachor brings a can-do attitude to our team. She is used to playing well and improving and she takes care of business."
Denver swept the team and individual medalist honors, as the Pioneers' Stephanie Sherlock finished on top of the field with a two-under par 214 (71-71-72). Denver tied Tuesday's team low round with a 292, giving the Pioneers a three-round total of 878, 16 strokes better than tournament runner-up UC Davis. Long Beach State (898), tournament host Oregon State (899) and UC Riverside (902) round out the top five.
Rachor (pictured) was one of three Pilots to fire in the 70's on Tuesday. Senior Ashley Williams shot a 75, while Kristin Howell carded a 79. Both Williams and Howell finished with a 240, good for 72nd place. Rachor and Howell each had two rounds in the 70's during the tourney, which featured a 17-team field.
Trysting Tree is a par-72 course that measures 6,271 yards.
The Pilots next take the course at the Inland Empire Women's Intercollegiate Tournament at the Hangman Valley Golf Club in Spokane, Wash. on Sept. 25-26.
