BOISE, Idaho - Portland sophomore Taryn Kuida shot three rounds in the 70's to finish tenth individually and help lead the Pilots to 10th place at the Bronco Fall Invitational, which concluded on Tuesday at the Banbury Golf Club. Kuida's three-round total of 225 (+12) was 15 stokes better than her previous 54-hole best as a Pilot.
Nebraska captured the team title behind a one-two finish by Cornhusker teammates Kate White and Elli Brown. White took medalist honors by totaling an even-par 213, three strokes better than Brown and Sydney Roughton of UC Davis, who tied for second. White opened with a four-under par 67 on the par 71 course on Monday.
Nebraska's total of 884 was eight strokes better than runner-up UC Davis. Tournament host Boise State (909) placed third, Brigham Young (917) was fourth and Xavier (920) placed fifth.
Portland as a team battled through a nasty second round to place 10th among the 17-team field, UP's best showing this fall. Portland totaled rounds of 311, 331 and 310 for a season-low 952. Scores were high across the board during Monday's second round when the weather turned cold, windy and rainy. Weather conditions were ideal for Tuesday's final round.
"Today was beautiful," Portland head coach Michelle Murphy said. "The pin placements were tough and the greens were super fast, but Taryn Kuida and Ashley Williams both had good rounds."
Kuida closed with a 75 after opening with rounds of 72 and 78. Her three-round total is a team-low this season for the Pilots. Senior Ashley Williams fired a 76 on Tuesday and finished in a tie for 38th with a 240. Senior Molly Edmunds had her best showing this fall with a 239, good for a tie for 36th. Senior Melanie Lee totaled a 256.
"So far this fall, two of our three rounds at each tournament have been good," Murphy said. "We'd like to have more consistency in our team scoring. Individually, our scores have been improving. Now we just need a better showing out of our fourth and fifth positions."
UP junior Kristin Howell finished with a solid 78 after encountering some difficulty on Monday. Howell was disqualified after the second round when it was determined that she lifted a leaf from a bunker to improve her lie. Rules state that only rocks can be removed from bunkers. Howell signed for an 81, when a two-shot penalty should have given her an 83. Portland would have finished in eighth place ahead of both Santa Clara and Wyoming had the error been realized.
The Pilots take the course again next week at the Lady Aztec Fall Classic in Chula Vista, Calif. The first two rounds at The Auld Course are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 16, with the final round slated for Tuesday.
