Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team could not hold onto a seven-goal lead, and fell to the Canisius College Griffins 14-12 on Saturday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. With the loss, Saint Mary's falls to 0-2 on the season, while the Griffins improved to 1-1 early in their 2007 campaign.
The Gaels got offto a quick start against Canisius College as Jen Utley, Jackie Spencer and Sonja Kapusta scored goals in the first seven minutes to give SMC a 3-0 lead. After Ashley Gray scored the first of her game-high four goals for Canisuis, SMC scored six of the next seven goals to take what seemed like a commanding 9-2 advantage.
Saint Mary's led 9-2 with 3:57 left in the first half, following four straight goals, but Canisius answered with three goals by Amanda Marts, Gray, and Whitney Card in a span of three minutes, cutting the deficit to 9-5 with 39 seconds left until halftime. The Gaels tallied the final goal of the first half with just two seconds on the clock and entered the break with a 10-5 lead.
The Griffins came back from halftime and scored the first six goals of the second half to take an 11-10 lead when Awehiyo Thomas scored back-to-back goals for Canisius' first lead of the game with 14:13 left to play. Saint Mary's answered with goals by Jackie Spencer and Chloe Dee to regain its lead at the 11:39 mark, but Lauren Walsh scored the equalizer for CC just 12 seconds later. Chelsea Martinez netted the game-winner with 9:35 remaining in the game and the Griffins added a late goal by Ashley Gray for the two-goal win.
Spencer led the Gaels with three goals and Kapusta's two goals and one assists matched Spencer for team-high point honors. Freshman Amber Lister had as career-high two goals and Alana Burrough, Dana Elfvin, Jen Utley and P.J. Hainley had a goal and assists each.
Gray's four goals and Thomas' three points led the Griffins on two goals and one assist. Lauren Walsh had two assists and one goal and Card, Martinez and Marts had two goals each for Canisius.
The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 28 against the Le Moyne University Dolphins. The game between the Gaels and Dolphins will begin at 3:30 p.m. at Saint Mary's Stadium.
