Moraga, CA- The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team's comeback effort late in the second half fell short, as the Longwood University Lancers held onto a 15-12 victory Wednesday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. Jackie Spencer and Lauren Riggers scored three goals apiece in the losing effort.
The Lancers and the Gaels traded goals throughout the first half until Riggers and Rosy Iaccino scored back-to-back goals to hand SMC a 4-3 lead with 8:40 left in the first half. Longwood soon responded and tallied three straight free position goals to cap off the first period with a 6-4 lead.
The Lancers tacked on three more goals to start the half and held onto a 9-4 lead with 25:00 minutes to play. The Gaels then came roaring back, cutting the lead to 9-7 by scoring three straight goals of their own. Jen Utley started the barrage on an assist by Alex Oetken. Spencer followed suite two minutes later, scoring on a Riggers pass. Molly Wagner then scored on a free position shot.
SMC and Longwood then traded goals again until the 41:00 minute mark, when the Lancers pulled away with three straight goals to make the score 15-10 with thee minutes to play. The Gaels then tacked on two more, when Wagner found Spencer for her third goal of the game. Riggers then secured her hat trick when she raced half the field to score with 11-seconds remaining.
Isa Cohen paced the Lancers with four goals and Joyce Haines added three. Five different Gaels tallied goals, with Spencer and Riggers leading the way with three goals and an assist each. Iaccino and Utley added two goals apiece. Emily Wilson earned the victory for Longwood by recording 14 saves on the afternoon. Katie Augustine suffered the loss, stopping six Lancer shots in the game.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Sunday, March 20 when it travels to Eugene, OR to face the Oregon Ducks. Game time is scheduled for noon from Pape Field.
