Princeton, RI - The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team suffered it second straight loss, with a 17-6 defeat on the road by Brown University from Stevenson Field. With the loss, Saint Mary's falls to 2-6 overall and Brown improved to 2-5 with the win.
The Brown Bears opened a 3-0 lead before Jackie Spencer netted SMC's first goal of the game at the 17:17 mark of the first half. Brown then scored four straight goals to open its lead to 7-1 with 9:16 left to play in the half. Lauren Frei scored her third goal of the season at the 6:03 mark, and Alex Oetken put in the final goal of the first 30 minutes with 25 seconds left in the half. Both Frei's and Oetken's goals were assisted by P.J. Hainley.
In the second half, Brown's Mimi DeTolla scored 1:21 into the half, and Lauren Vitkus scored her third of the game 32 seconds later to give Brown a 9-3 lead less than two minutes into the second half.
Spencer scored her second goal of the contest at the 27:37 mark, and after Brown scored six straight goals, Spencer netted her third hat trick of the season with her third goal of the game with 10:21 remaining. Brown answered with to more goals, and SMC's Maddie March ended the days scoring with her fifth of the season at the 59:20 mark.
Brown doubled the shot output by the Gaels, as the Bears took 40 shots compared to just 20 by SMC. Brown also controlled the play on the ground as it collected 25 groundballs while the Gaels had just 11 groundballs.
SMC goalkeeper Hilary Gardner played the entire 60 minutes. Gardner allowed 17 goals and had 13 total saves in the game.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Sunday, April 1 against the UC Davis Aggies in a non-conference game. First draw for the game between SMC and the Aggies is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Aggie Field.
