Women's Lacrosse Falls to Duquesne 19-2

Pittsburgh, PA - The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team suffered a 19-2 defeat to Duquesne University, in a non-conference bout, Monday afternoon on Rooney Field. In the Dukes' home opener, Kelly Mulford led the DU with five goals, including two on free position attempts.

Molly Wagner and Alex Oetken scored for the Gaels, while SMC goalkeeper Katie Augustine had 14 saves and faced 33 shots.

Also hitting multiple goals for Duquesne were Ginger Flocco, Ashley Wood and Laura App with three while Caroline Gallagher added two scores. Mulford, Flocco and Stacie Pollock each had two assists.

Laura App opened the game's scoring with a feed from Flocco just :38 into play. Wood notched her first of two free position goals at 2:43 before the Gael's Oetken put the visitor on the board with an unassisted goal 5:48 into the game. Mulford hit four the Dukes' next seven goals with Flocco netting the other three to give Duquesne a 9-1 edge with 12 minutes to go. Wagner would find the back of the game for Saint Mary's in the 22nd minute, but the Gaels would not hit pay dirt again. Duquesne held a 12-2 edge at the intermission.

The second frame was all Duquesne as the host hit the back of the cage eight times for the 19-2 final. The Dukes out-shot the Gaels 19-3 in the second frame alone and 47-9 for the contest.

Duquesne held a 23-13 edge in ground balls and a 15-8 margin in draw controls. Duquesne also forced eight SMC turnovers on the day.

The Dukes improve to 5-2 overall while SMC drops to 1-8 on the season.
