Davis, CA - In the first game played at the newly constructed Aggie Stadium, the Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team suffered a 17-5 non-conference loss to the UC Davis Aggies on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Saint Mary's falls to 2-7 on the year and the Aggies improve to 6-5 overall.
Playing in the first game on its new home field, UC Davis wasted little time opening a big lead on the Gaels. UC Davis' Patrice Clark scored the first of her five first half goals 3:28 into the game to spark a five-goal burst by the Aggies to open the game. With the Aggies leading 5-0, Dana Elfvin scored the first goal of the game for SMC at the 14:42 mark.
The Aggies then posted five straight goals to open a 10-1 advantage with just under eight minutes left to play in the first half. Dana Elfvin scored her second goal of the game at the 24:40 mark and Sonja Kapusta found the back of the net at the 25:28 mark to cut the deficit to 10-3. Clark scored her fifth goal of the half with just over three minutes remaining in the half to give the Aggies an 11-3 lead at the break.
UCD scored the first four goals of the second half to open a 15-3 lead with just under 15 minutes left in the game. Kapusta and Alana Burrough scored for the Gaels before Davis' Molly Lapolla and Megan O'Connor scored the final two goals of the game. O'Connor finished the game with three goals and Katie McGovern added for goals for the Aggies.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Tuesday, April 3 when the Gaels play at Davidson. The game between SMC at the Wildcats will begin at 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
