Women's Lacrosse Falls to Davidson 17-10

Davidson, NC - Jackie Spencer and Jen Utley had four points each for the Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team, but it wasn't enough as the Gaels suffered a 17-10 non-conference road loss to the Davidson Wildcats on Tuesday evening. The loss drops the Gaels' record to 2-8 this season, while Davidson improved to 1-8 overall.

Jackie Spencer came off the bench to tally four points on three goals and one assist. The three goals marked the fourth hat trick of the season for the senior midfielder, and the 18th of her career. She now leads the team in goals with 18 this season.

Utley matched Spencer with four points, as Utley contributed with two goals and two assists. P.J. Hainley scored three goals for her first hat trick of the season and third of her career.

Davidson jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but SMC answered with goals by Sonja Kapusta and Utley to even the score at two goals apiece. Davidson rallied for three straight goals before Utley found the back of the net for her second goal of the game and 10th of the season at the 10:41 mark of the first half.

After the Utley goal, Davidson scored four goals in a three and a half minute stretch to open a 9-3 lead with just under five minutes left until halftime. Hainley scored her first goal with 59 seconds left in the first half to get the Gaels within five (9-4) at the break.

Saint Mary's closed the deficit to 9-6 when Alana Burrough and Spencer scored to open the second half. Davidson's Jen Crawford answered, then Spencer struck again to keep the deficit at three goals (10-7). The Wildcats scored the next three goals, one by Kelly Finnigan and two by Emily Palmer to open a 13-7 advantage with 8:34 remaining in the game.

SMC tried to mount one last comeback as Spencer and Hainley scored back-to-back goals for the Gaels to get within four (13-9) with 5:29 remaining. Davidson scored four of the last five goals of the contest to earn a 17-10 win, the first of the season for the Wildcats.

Saint Mary's will return to action on Friday, April 6 against the Manhattan Jaspers. The game between SMC and Manhattan will begin at 10 a.m. at Gaelic Park.
