Denver, CO - In a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game, the Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team was defeated 20-7 by the No. 17 ranked Denver Pioneers on Friday afternoon from Barton Stadium. The loss drops the Gaels' season record to 3-9 overall and 0-2 against MPSF opponents. Denver improved to 13-2 overall and 3-0 in conference play.
The Gaels were led by Jackie Spencer, who netted two goals to bring her team-leading total to 24 on the season. Spencer was the only Gaels to score twice as Amy Daniels, Amber Lister, Maddie Marsh, Jen Utley and Alex Oetken tallied goals for SMC.
Denver held the Gaels scoreless over the first 15 minutes of the game and opened a 6-0 lead when Kristie Leggio, the nation's third leading scorer, netted her second goal of the contest at the 16:16 mark. After Spencer scored SMC's first goal at the 15:05 mark, Denver went on to score five straight goals to open an 11-1 lead with 6:26 left on the clock.
Amber Lister, who was returning after missing the last seven games with an ankle injury, scored her eight goal of the season at the 2:54 mark and Maddie Marsh scored her sixth goal of the season with 1:10 left until halftime to cut the deficit to 11-3 at the break.
In the second half, SMC's Amy Daniels scored five minutes into the half to get SMC to within seven (11-4), Denver rallied to scored seven straight goals to take a commanding 18-4 lead with 15 minutes remaining. SMC and Denver exchanged goals for the final 11 minutes, as the MPSF leading Pioneers won 20-7.
For Denver Leggio finished the game with six points on four goals and two assists and Ali Flury had four points on three goals and one assist.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Sunday when the Gaels host the Oregon Ducks in a MPSF match-up from Saint Mary's Stadium with first draw scheduled for noon.
