Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team returned home after five straight road games, but fell to the Oregon Ducks 15-7 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Sunday afternoon from Saint Mary's Stadium. P.J. Hainley and Abbie Coleman paced the Gaels with three points each, as both had two goals and an assist against the Ducks.
Oregon (11-5/4-0) opened the game by scoring nine straight goals to take a 9-0 lead with 8:03 remaining in the first half. During that run, Jana Bradley, Brooke Dieringer, and Ilsa van den Berg had two goals each. Bradley and van den Berg finished the game with three goals each. van den Berg finished with a game-high five points as she added two assists.
It took Saint Mary's (3-10/0-3) more than 26 minutes to score its first goal against Oregon, as Dana Elfvin ended the drought with her fourth goal of the season at the 3:36 mark. SMC finished the half with three goals, as Abbie Coleman and P.J. Hainley scored before halftime. Oregon led 10-3 at the break.
Oregon answered with three goals to open the second half, taking a 13-3 lead when Alison Leiner scored with 23:57 left on the clock. Coleman and Maddie Marsh scored for SMC, before Bradley and Jenny Browne extended the Ducks' advantage back to 10 goals (15-5). SMC's Alana Burrough and Hainley scored the last two goals of the game, as Oregon won by eight, 15-7.
Hilary Gardner took the loss in net for SMC as she allowed nine first half goals while making four saves. Sara Jo Rodriguez played the final 38 minutes of the game for the Gaels and allowed six goals and had eight saves. Rodriguez had three first-half saves and made five saves in the second half.
Oregon's starting goalkeeper Anna Poponyak got the win as she played 18 minutes and had one save but did not allow a goal. Sam Debow, who relieved Poponyak, allowed all seven goals and recorded 11 saves, all coming in the second half.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Tuesday April 24 when the Gaels travel to California for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game. The game between SMC and Cal will begin at 4 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
