Women's Lacrosse Falls to Drexel 14-10 on Saturday

Philadelphia, Pa. - Drexel's Emily Hoesch tallied five goals as the Dragons defeated the Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team by a final score of 14-10 att Vidas Field. With the victory Drexel improves to 11-5, while the Gaels fall to 1-12.

Jen Utley gave Saint Mary's the lead in the opening minutes with an unassisted goal. Jen Bonini put the Dragons on the board with a pass to Hoesch inside, with a shot past SMC keeper, Katie Augustine. Thirty seconds later Saint Mary's fouled Gwenna Johnson to send her to the eight meter arc for a free- position goal, putting the Dragons up 2-1.

Saint Mary's was quick to respond, scoring the next three goals to take a 4-2 lead with goals by Jessica Tsou, Molly Wagner and Ally High. The Dragons called a time-out to regroup. Once back on the field, Bonini ignited a six-goal run to send Drexel into the half up 8-4. Johnson, Hoesch, Kerry Kelly and Alison Smith each scored during the run.

The Gaels' Utley opened the second-half as she began the first, with an unassisted goal at 28:58. Drexel's Johnson responded to keep the Dragons on top with a goal at 26:52. Caterina Carafides found Nicole Adams inside for a Drexel goal at 25:12, putting the Dragons up 9-5. The Gaels refused to let up, battling out a physical contest to score back-to-back goals to bring them within two.

Drexel's Smith took a one-on-one from the 12-meter arc to score at 17:02. Hoesch added another score at 12:44 to counter the Gaels' run. Two minutes later Saint Mary's Tsou and High teamed up to score twice, assisting on each other's goals. Utley fired in a free position attempt to bring the Gaels within two again.

Drexel's physical defense lead by senior Elisabeth Bembridge would hold SMC scoreless for the duration. With less than 30 seconds remaining, Hoesch tallied again to secure the win and Nicole Iacono scored in the final seconds to make the final score 14-10.

Drexel's Kristen Urian stopped 11 shots turning in a solid performance. Urian stopped seven in the second-half as the Dragons' defense calmed the Gaels' attack to win. Saint Mary's Katie Augustine made 13 saves, nine in the first half. Augustine also grabbed a team-high five groundballs in the loss.

Saint Mary's will return to action on Wednesday, April 27 when the Gaels travel to UC Davis for a 4:30 p.m. game against the Aggies in a non-conference game.
