Berkeley, CA - The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team closed its 2007 road schedule with an 18-9 loss to California in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Tuesday from Memorial Stadium. With the loss the Gaels fall to 3-11 overall and 0-4 in the MPSF and Cal improved to 6-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference standings.
For the Gaels, three players scored two goals, but Abbie Coleman led the way with three points on a goal and two assists. Coleman, a freshman from Mendhem, NJ, now leads the team with 12 assists and the three points gives her 29 points on the year, which is second on the team. The three players who tallied two goals for SMC were freshmen Amber Lister and Alana Burrough and junior Jen Utley.
Cal opened the game by scoring the first nine goals, and held the Gaels scoreless for nearly the entire first 30 minutes. Coleman found the net with one second left of the clock for SMC's first goal of the game.
Lister scored the first goal of the second half, and after Cal's Laura Cavallo scored her third of a game-high five goals, Saint Mary's answered with goals by Maddie Marsh and Alex Oetken to cut the Cal lead to 10-4 with 23 minutes left in the game.
Cal then rallied for three straight goals, and after Lister netter her second goal of the game, the Bears ran off five straight goals to take an 18-5 lead with 9:32 remaining. SMC scored the final four goals of the game, which included back-to-back goals by Utley followed by back-to-back goals by Burrough.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Saturday, April 28 with its final regular season game. The Gaels will host the UC Davis Aggies at Noon in Saint Mary's Stadium on Senior Day. The Gaels will honor senior Jackie Spencer in a pregame ceremony.
