Moraga, CA - The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team closed it 2007 home schedule with a 15-6 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation loss to UC Davis. With the loss, Saint Mary's falls to 3-12 overall and 0-5 in MPSF play. The Aggies improved to 8-8 overall and 1-4 against MPSF competition.
Six different players scored the six goals by Saint Mary's. The Gaels got on the scoreboard first when freshman Alana Burrough found the back of the net at the 20:46 mark of the first half. UC Davis' Katie McGovern answered for the Aggies three minutes later, and after SMC went ahead 2-1 following an Abbie Coleman goal, Davis ran off four straight goals to take a 5-2 lead, with 8:17 remaining in the half, following back-to-back goals by Megan O'Connor.
The Gaels answered with goals by Lauren Frei and Maddie Marsh to cut the deficit to 5-4 with 1:41 left in the half. The Aggies would get goals from Alden Monger and Molly Lapolla to close the half with a 7-4 lead.
O'Connor opened the second half with her third of four goals in the game just 50 second into the period. Amber Lister answered for the Gaels, but five straight goals by UC Davis in the next six minutes had the Aggies in a commanding 13-5 lead with 22:35 remaining in the game. Alex Oetken scored for SMC at the 17:32 mark, but that would be the last goal of the game for SMC.
UC Davis goalkeeper Hilary Harkins earned the win as she recorded eight saves while allowing six goals by SMC. UC Davis out shot the Gaels 32-23 for the game. The Gaels record 16 draw controls, which were nine more than UCD, but the Gaels turned the ball over 24 times compared to 12 by the Aggies.
Saint Mary's will return to action on Thursday in the opening round of the MPSF Playoffs. The Gaels will enter the playoff brackets as the six seed and will play the three seeded Stanford Cardinals. All the games of the MPSF women's lacrosse playoffs will be played at UC Davis.
