Moraga, CA - In the opening round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation women's lacrosse playoffs, the No. 6-seeded Saint Mary Gaels suffered a 17-10 defeat to the No. 3 seeded Denver Pioneers from Saint Mary's Stadium on Thursday afternoon.
Saint Mary's had three players score multiple goals in the game as Jen Utley led the Gaels with four goals, Ally High added three goals and Rosy Iaccino scored twice. High, Utley and Molly Wagner added one assist each.
The Gaels took an early lead with Iaccino and High scored the first two goals of the contest. After the two teams traded goals, and with SMC leading 4-2, Denver answered with goals by Steph Greenlees and Tara Bourdelaise to even the score at 4-4.
Ally High scored her third goal of the game at the 15:07 mark, and after Greenlees evened the score at 5-5, Iaccino and Utley put the Gaels ahead 7-5 with 2:54 remaining in the first half. Oregon answered with two goals in the final two minutes as Crystal Jack scored at the 28:23 mark and Victoria Baines knotted the score at 7-7 just 17 seconds later.
Denver scored at will early in the second half, as the Pioneers scored the eight goals in the first 7:24 of the second half to take a 15-7 lead with 22:36 remaining in the contest. Saint Mary's ended the scoring drought when Jessica Tsou took an assist from High at the 44:52 mark. Following the goal by Tsou, Denver answered with back-to-back goals before SMC score two of the final three tallies of the game.
For Denver, Greenlees scored four goals, Jack added three, and Baines, Kelly O'Connell, Kiley Murphy, and Tara Bourdelaise scored to goals each. Tanya Fuchs dished out a game-high five assists and added one goal.
In goal for the Pioneers, Steph Schneider played all 60 minutes, allowed 10 goals, while collecting nine saves against 27 shots to record the victory. Katie Augustine took the loss in net for the Gaels as she collected nine saves against 36 shots from the Pioneers.
In the first game of the day, UC Davis defeated Oregon by a final score of 7-6. With the score tied at 5-5, Katie McGovern scored two goals in a span of 25 second to give UC Davis a 7-5 lead. UC Davis goalkeeper Kristen Braasch recorded three saves in the final two minutes to make McGovern's goal at the 50:39 mark stand up as the game winner. Oregon's Jen May had a free position attempt with one second remaining in the game, but Braasch came up with the save to preserve the win for the Aggies.
With the loss SMC falls to 1-16 overall on the year and will play its final game of the season on Friday. The Gaels will take on the Oregon Ducks at Noon in the game to determine fifth and sixth place in the MPSF. Following the game between SMC and Oregon, Stanford will take on UC Davis at 2:00 p.m. and the final game of the day will have California against Denver beginning at 4:00 p.m.
