Women's Lacrosse Opens MPSF Playoffs With 20-7 Loss To Stanford

Davis, CA - The number-six seeded Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team opened the 2007 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Playoffs with a 20-7 loss to the number -three seeded Stanford Cardinal on Friday Afternoon from Aggies Stadium in Davis, CA. The loss drops the Gaels' overall record to 3013 while Stanford improved to 7-8 this season.

P.J. Hainley and Jen Utley led the Gaels with three points, as each scored three goals for the Gaels. The three goals for Hainley gives her 23 goals this season, which is second on the team. Utley now has 16 goals on the year following her second hat trick of the season. Abbie Coleman netted the seventh goal for the Gaels on Friday.

Stanford opened the game by scoring eight of the first nine goals to open an 8-1 lead following a Dana Lindsay goal with 13:16 remaining in the first half. After Utley scored her first goal of the game, Stanford scored three straight goals to open an 11-2 lead with 8:36 left in the first half. Hainley's first goal came with 6:44 left in the first half, but three more Stanford goals had the Cardinal leading 13-3 at the intermission.

Stanford opened the second half with the first two goals to extend its lead to 15-3 with almost 27 minutes left to play. Hainley and Utley sandwiched goals around a tally by Maris Perlman, and after Stanford's Lauren Schmidt scored her second goal of the game, Utley answered for SMC with her third of the game. Three more goals by Stanford followed, before SMC's Hainley scored on a free position attempts with four seconds left on the clock.

Saint Mary's will close its 2007 season on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game against UC Davis in the MPSF Playoffs. The game between SMC and UC Davis will determine the fifth and sixth places in the MPSF standings.
