Davis, CA - Jackie Spencer scored six goals for the Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team, but it wasn't enough as UC Davis defeated the Gaels 12-10 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Playoffs on Saturday afternoon from Aggie Stadium. The loss ends the season for SMC, which completed the year with a 3-14 overall record, while the Aggies improved to 9-9 overall.
Spencer entered the game with 94 career goals, and the senior, who was playing in her last game, led all players with six goals to bring her career total to 100 goals. Spencer joins her sister Colette Spencer (182) and Megan Bryan (133) as the only players in the history of the SMC women's lacrosse program to score 100 career goals.
Saint Mary's got on the scoreboard first as sophomore attacker P.J. Hainley scored the first of her three goals against the Aggies. UC Davis answered with a goal by Patrice Clark and two free position goals by Katie McGovern to open a 3-1 lead seven minutes into the game. Spencer netted the first of her two first-half goals, and he UCD's Olivia Jarem scored to give the Aggies a 2-goal lead again.
Spencer and Hainley then scored back-to-back goals for the Gaels to even the score at 4-4, but UC Davis' leading scorer Megan O'Connor scored an unassisted goal with one second left on the clock to give the Aggies a 5-4 lead at halftime.
Three minutes into the second half, O'Connor scored her second goal of the game with a free position goal with 27:08 remaining in the game. Hainley scored her third goal of the game a minute and a half later, and after O'Connor scored her third goal, SMC answered with three straight scores to take an 8-7 lead with 17:27 left on the clock. The three goals came from Spencer twice and Abbie Coleman's only goal of the game gave the Gaels the lead.
Clark found the back of the net to even the score at 8-8, but Spencer responded with her fifth goal of the game for another SMC lead. UCD's O'Connor and Molly Lapolla scored back-to-back goals to give the Aggies a 1-goal lead with 5:38 left, but Spencer got the Gaels even again just 16 seconds later with her 100th career goal. UC Davis held the Gaels scoreless the last 5:22, and McGovern scored the game-winning goal on a free position shot with 4:24 left to play. Alden Monger scored with 15 ticks left on the clock to give the Aggies a two-goal win.
