Women's Lacrosse To Host Iona and Lafayette This Week

THIS WEEK IN GAEL LACROSSE
The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team will return to action on Saturday, March 10 with the fifth game of a seven-game home stand to open the 2007 season. Saint Mary's will host the Iona Gaels at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Saint Mary's Stadium. Saint Mary's enters the game against the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference team with a 1-3 record following a 17-15 overtime win over Siena on Saturday. Saint Mary's will then play the Lafayette Leopards on Monday, March 12 with the opening draw scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at Saint Mary's Stadium.

WHO'S HOT:
In SMC's exciting 17-15 overtime win over Siena on Saturday, freshman attacker Abbie Coleman had an outstanding game for the Gaels. Coleman led the Gaels with six points, the most by any SMC player in a game this season. Coleman scored a career-high four goals and dished out a career-best two assists.

SCOUTING THE IONA GAELS
Iona opened its 2007 campaign with a 19-4 victory over Saint Francis on March 6. In that game, Iona's Christie Godlewski led the way with seven points on four goals and three assists. Marisa Audley and Jaclyn O'Leary had five points, each scoring four goals and one assist, and Courtney Hocking had four points on two goals and two assists.

SMC VERSUS IONA; THE SERIES
When SMC and Iona meet on Saturday, it will mark the first ever meeting in women's lacrosse between the two schools.

SCOUTING THE LAFAYETTE LEOPARDS
Lafayette enters this week with a 0-2 record following losses to Marist (18-8) and Columbia (17-5) to open the season, Lafayette will look for its first win of the season on March 9 when the Leopards host Central Connecticut State before making the trip to the West Coast for games against SMC and UC Davis. Lafayette's leader this season is Maddy Booth with seven points on six goals and one assist. Three other players have two goals in Kristin Ruminski, Maria Drehwing, and Casey Sharkey.

SMC VERSUS LAFAYETTE; THE SERIES
Monday's game between SMC and Lafayette will be the first meeting between the two schools in women's lacrosse.

LOOKING BACK AT THE LAST GAME
Saint Mary's posted its first win of the 2007 season and first for Lauren Uhr with a 17-15 overtime win over Siena on Saturday. The Gaels trailed by as many as four goals in the first half, and then scored the game-tying goal, with a man down, and just 25 second remaining on the clock. Abbie Coleman had a breakout game for the Gaels, scoring four goals and dishing out two assists. Sonja Kapusta notched her first hat-trick of the season with three goals and added two assists.

KAPUSTA LEADS GAELS IN EARLY SEASON
Sophomore attacker Sonja Kapusta is becoming a scoring threat for the Gaels. Through four games, Kapusta has six goals and a team-high five assists to lead the squad with 11 points. She's scored in three of four games and notched a hat trick with three goals against Siena. The hat trick against the Saints was the second of her career.

WHAT'S NEXT FOR SMC
The Saint Mary's women's lacrosse team will return to action on Saturday, March 17 when the Gaels host the William & Mary Tribe in a noon match from Saint Mary's Stadium. Following the game against the Tribe, SMC will play their first road game of the season against Brown University on March 24.
