Women's Rowing Starts Season Strong at Sacramento Invitational

Sacramento, CA - The Saint Mary's women's rowing team opened the 2007 spring season at the 2007 Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The women's rowing team participated in five events, which included the varsity eight, the second varsity eight, the varsity four, the varsity lightweight four and the novice eight.

In the varsity eight event, Saint Mary's finished second overall behind host Sacramento State. The Gaels outlasted the Stanford Lightweight by .6 seconds, and Santa Clara by just over nine seconds. SMC's second varsity eight boat finished third in its race, posting a time of 7:27.5 to finish 17 seconds behind Sacramento State's A boat and 7.4 seconds behind the Hornets B boat. SMC's second varsity eight crossed the line 10.3 seconds ahead of Santa Clara.

In the varsity four race, Saint Mary's finished third with a time of 8:19.0, which was 38 seconds off the pace of Sacramento State and 30 seconds off the time of Santa Clara. The Gaels' varsity lightweight four battled Stanford to the wire, and finished just 1.2 seconds behind the Cardinal for second place. SMC crossed the line nearly 20 seconds ahead of Humboldt State and more than 30 seconds faster than Santa Clara.

SMC's novice eight boat posted a fourth place finish in the Gaels' only novice competition of the day. The novice eight finished the race in a time of 7:53.10 to finish behind Sacramento State, Humboldt State and Santa Clara.

The women's rowing team will return to action on March 11 when the varsity team competes in a junior varsity dual against California at the Redwood Shores in Palo Alto, CA.

Novice Eight: Cox: Desiree Lopez, Shannel Benisano, Tiffany Warner, Livi Haro, Miranda Ripoli , Michelle Nenzel, Jamie Sullivan, Lacey Olson, Jennifer Hazlewood .
