Lake Natomo, CA - The Saint Mary's College women's rowing team opened the spring season at the Sacramento Invitational at Lake Natoma on Saturday. The Gaels had three eights in the water, with the varsity eight finishing second, the second eight finishing third, and the novice eight posting a third place finish.
Against four Northern California schools, the Saint Mary's varsity eight posted a second place finish with a time of 7:03.5, seven seconds behind Sacramento State. Finishing behind the Gaels boat were Sonoma State (7:29) and Humboldt State (7:41). With four freshmen in the varsity eight boat to open the season, head coach Pasha Spencer is optimistic about the season.
"We executed our race plan, but I think we can do better," said Spencer. "We're going to make some adjustments and focus on our next races against WCC schools in the WCC Challenge next week."
The second varsity eight, also competing with four freshmen in the boat, posted a third place finish in a five boat race. The Gaels' second varsity squad finished their race with a time of 7:31.0, 15 seconds behind Sacramento State's first place time of 7:16.3 and second place Stanford Lightweights, which crossed the line with a time of 7:29.5. Finishing behind SMC was Humboldt State with a time of 7:41.6.
The last race for the Gaels was the novice eight, where SMC posted a time of 7:38.8 to finish in third place in the five-boat race. Sacramento State's novice eight posted a time of 7:20.6 to set the pace and the Sonoma State squad finished three seconds ahead of SMC. Rounding out the field was Humboldt State (7:46) and the California Lightweights (7:50).
Saint Mary's will return to the water on Saturday and Sunday, March 18-19 at the West Coast Conference Challenge at Lake Natomo. The Gaels' first race of the event will have the varsity eight competing head-to-head against Gonzaga at 2 p.m. SMC's varsity eight will complete the event on Sunday with two races, the first against San Diego in the morning and the last race with have the Gaels rowing against LMU in the afternoon. Also competing in the event for SMC will be the second varsity eight and the novice eight teams.
