Two Boats Beat Bruins

MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - The LMU men's varsity 4 and men's novice 4 boats defeated UCLA at Ballona Creek on Saturday, but the Bruins were too fast for the Lions in the other events of the day. The Lions' men's varsity 4 downed UCLA by nearly 15 seconds.

All races were rowed against the tide. There was a slight tailwind for Novice 8, Novice 4 and Varsity 4 races, and a 8-10mph headwind for Women's 2nd Varsity 8, and both Varsity 8 events. The men's novice 8, women's novice 8, men's varsity 4, women's varsity 4, and men's novice 4 raced 1750m due to low tide. Women's 2nd Varsity 8 and both Varsity 8 events raced 2k.

The Lions found its best success in the men's varsity 4 race. The boat finished with a time of 6:18.2, almost 15 seconds faster than UCLA's time of 6:33.1. Members of the men's varsity 4 were coxswain Whitney Powell, Miles Dobbyn, Hamilton Hiatt, Jordan Perez and Hansen Perkins.

The men's novice 4 also defeated UCLA. The LMU boat finished in a time of 7:08.9, while the Bruins were close behind at 7:10.8. Members of the boat were coxswain Megan Palmer, Ben Ashley, Kyle Hickman, Patrick Callan and John Landwehr.

UCLA won the other races of the day, including all four on the women's side, and the men's varsity 8 and novice 8.
