Women's Rowing Takes Gonzaga To the Wire at WCC Challenge

SACRAMENTO, CA - The Saint Mary's women's rowing varsity eight team got off to a good start on the first day of competition at the West Coast Conference Challenge at Lake Natoma. In its only race of the day, Saint Mary's tested Gonzaga, falling to the nine-time WCC Champions by less than three seconds.

Saint Mary's rowed even against the Bulldogs for most of the 2,000-meter race and crossed the finish line with a time of 7:06.4, which was 2.7 seconds behind Gonzaga. Earlier in the day, Gonzaga defeated Santa Clara by more than 23 seconds.

Saint Mary's will continue action in the WCC Challenge on Saturday with dual races against Loyola Marymount and San Diego in varsity eight competition. The Gaels will race against LMU at 9:30 a.m. and San Diego at 1:45 p.m.

In addition to the varsity eights, SMC will also race against San Diego in a second varsity eight at 9:45 a.m. and the novice eight will compete against LMU.
