Toreros Capture the Yergler Cup Once Again

March 25, 2006

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's rowing team raced against Saint Mary's College for the Yergler Cup in Sacramento as part of the WCC Challenge.  USD retained their title with a decisive win over Saint Mary's.

"Saint Mary's has definitely gained some good speed this year," commented second-year Head Coach Joan O'Hara.  "I know they have recently picked up a bunch of scholarships, so I expect the depth of their athlete pool has increased dramatically. We are looking forward to another match-up with them at the Crew Classic in a couple of weeks!"

Last year, the Torero's beat the Gaels by a margin of 27-seconds.

Also racing against the Gaels were the USD JV Eight and the Third Varsity Eight.  Both of these boats won their respective races as well. "There was a lot of work done during our training camp to find our 2V8 combination.  I am very excited about this combination of athletes. With this fresh 2V8 line-up, the goal for the race against Saint Mary's was to be proactive and consistent.  It was very rewarding to watch this crew achieve these race goals, without an overly defined race plan, and execute a strong performance on the Natoma course."
