USD Brings Home the Berg Cup for Another Year

March 25, 2006

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The Toreros traveled to Newport Beach this past weekend to compete in the annual Berg Cup regatta, hosted by Orange Coast College .  This was the first race opportunity for the USD Varsity Four, which will be competing for points at the WCC Conference Championship at the end of the month. "The Varsity Four executed perfectly what we had been working on for this race," commented Assistant Coach, Angela Chiarenza. "Our plan was to stay in striking distance in the first quarter of the race, and then walk away from the pack at 800 meters down.  That's exactly what we did and it resulted in a strong win."

Both the Varsity Eight and the JV Eight competed in the Varsity Eights event, as there were no other JV entries.  USD's Varsity Eight took control of the field within the first 50 meters and expanded their lead with every stroke throughout the race.  The Toreros made it look easy as they passed through the 1000 meter mark with several lengths of open water on the rest of the field.  Unfortunately, there was a problem with the timing, so were no accurate finish times to report, but the USD Varsity Eight was approximately 200 meters ahead of second-place Long Beach as they passed through the finish line.

The Berg Cup was presented by its namesake, Mr. Craig Berg, who commented, when presenting the trophy to USD, that they looked like they were ahead "by train lengths!"  The Toreros will hold on to the cup for 2006, the third year in a row.
