San Diego, CA - On the opening day of the 2006 San Diego Crew Classic, the Saint Mary's women's rowing team participated in two races. In the first races for the Gaels, the varsity eight posted a third place finish in their heat race, and narrowly missed the grand final on Sunday. In the Carley Copley Cup, the junior varsity eight posted a fourth place finish in their heat race on Saturday.
The varsity eight posted a time of 6:47.77 in the qualifying race and finished behind Miami (6:43.70) and Saint Joseph's (6:45.54). Behind the Gaels were Temple (6:50.48), San Diego (6:52.81), Colorado (7:24.11) and Claremont (7:59.99). Aside from posting a faster time that USD, the Gaels also pulled a faster time that Santa Clara (7:07.25) which finished sixth in their heat race.
The JV boat pulled a time of 7:30.67 in their heat and finished fifth overall in the race. The Gaels finished behind Cal (6:59), Notre Dame (7:09) San Diego Rowing Club (7:17) and the Notre Dame Alum (7:28).
The Saint Mary's rowing team will continue action in the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday when the varsity eight competes in the petite final of the Women's Cal Cup at 9:20 a.m.
