Lions See Improvement At San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Four LMU boats saw continued improvement over the weekend at the San Diego Crew Classic. The Lions advanced to the Petite Final in all four races, defeating several WCC schools along the way.

The men's varsity 8 started the competition on Saturday morning in heat A of the Men's Cal Cup. The Lions battled with the top teams, just missing a spot in the Grand Final by less than two seconds. LMU finished third with a team of 6:12.88. The Lions defeated Long Beach State, UCSB, Cal Lightweights and Santa Clara in the heat.

In the Petite Final, the Lions finished fifth to place 11th out of 20 boats. LMU defeated Long Beach State in the Petite Final. The men's varsity 8 lineup was: coxswain Vanessa Garrett, Tim Santy, Landon Storaasli, Scott Wike, Mark Stellner, Mike Wither, John McAndrew, Kevin Druffel-Rodriguez and David Cronin.

The women's varsity 8 competed in the prestigious Jessup-Whitter Cup, and the Lions continued to show improvement in preparation for the WCC Championship. LMU placed fifth in the heat to advance to the Petite Final.

In the Petite final, LMU placed fourth to finish 10th out of 11 teams. The Lions raced very well, trading spots with Purdue throughout the race. The Boilermakers and San Diego State pushed past the Lions in the final 500 meters, narrowly edging LMU by less than two seconds.

Lineup for the women's varsity 8 was: coxswain Jennifer Guess, Courtney Cox, Alli Mitrovich, Marni Hietbrink, Jen Topor, Molly Stewart, Alexa Aftias, Sydney Johnson, Jill Austin.

The men's novice 8 had a strong performance in the heats, placing fourth to advance to the Petite Final. LMU defeated WCC opponents Santa Clara and San Diego in the process. In the Petite Final, the Lions finished fifth to place 11th of 21 teams. Fourth place USC edged the Lions by less than three seconds. LMU defeated UC Irvine by nearly nine seconds.

Rowing in the men's novice 8 boat this weekend were: coxswain Nick Llanos, Dominic Leone, Ben Ashley, Kent Stephanoff, Lorenzo Nardini, Patrick Callan, Kyle Hickman, John Landwehr and Miles Dobbyn.

Finally, the women's JV 8 raced as well as they have all season and advanced to the Petite Final. LMU finished sixth in its heat. In the Petite Final, the Lions finished fifth to finish 11th out of 12 teams. The Lions defeated WCC rival San Diego and saw a smaller margin against San Diego State in the final from the heats.

Competing in the women's JV8 boat for LMU this weekend were: coxswain Candice Matheny, Kathryn Maloney, Talya Courtney, Stephanie Speer, Becky Nolan, Adrienne Lindstrom, Brooke LeJeune, Sam Cloonan and Ainsley Cain.

The Lions return to action on April 14th at the Windermere Regatta at Redwood Shores, Palo Alto, CA. Competition at the Windermere Regatta wraps up on April 15th.
