LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The LMU men's varsity 8 had a strong showing at the USC Invitational on Saturday, placing second behind the host team and holding off Sacramento State and UCSB. The men's varsity 4 also finished second, while the novice 8 placed third. These races serve as the final tuneup before the WIRA Championships at Lake Natoma on Saturday, April 28th.
In the men's varsity 8, the Trojans won the George Gordon Cup with a time of 6:07.03. The Lions edged out Sacramento State, finishing with a time of 6:12.79 while the Hornets settled for third with a time of 6:13.03. UC Santa Barbara placed fourth with a time of 6:18.56 while the USC JV boat finished fifth with a time of 6:43.75.
The varsity 4 placed second in the two-team field, as UCSB won the race in a time of 7:15.25. LMU finished the 2k race with a time of 7:21.23.
The novice 8 placed third in the four-boat field. USC won the race with a time of 6:16.18, while Sacramento State finished second at 6:41.37. LMU's time of 6:45.42 was good enough for third, while USC's second novice 8 boat was fourth with a time of 6:51.00.
The men's and women's crew teams will be back in action this weekend in conference championship races. The women's team looks to defend its WCC title at the WCC Championships on Friday, April 27th. Both teams will be in action at the WIRA Championships on Saturday, April 28th. All races are held at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif.
