Zags Advance Three Boats to WIRA Grand Finals

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing program advanced all three boats to the Sunday Grand Finals as the first day of the 2007 WIRA Championships came to a close on Saturday. Gonzaga will have a chance to win its second title in three years in both the Varsity 8+ and Junior Varsity 8+ races as both boats advanced after placing first in each of its heats. The Bulldogs Novice 8+ boat looks to capture their second-straight title and make it a Zag sweep after advancing through their heat on Saturday with a first-place finish.

The Gonzaga Varsity 8+ boat continued its domination by winning its heat in a time of 6:45.3; nearly six seconds ahead of Western Washington University who placed second with a time of 6:51.0. Also advancing out of that heat to the Grand Final was San Diego State with a finish of 6:56.6.

The Zags Varsity 8+ time was also the fastest time of the two Varsity 8+ heats. The University of San Diego won the second heat in a time of 6:47.5. Sacramento State University placed second (6:54.1) while Loyola Marymount University took third (6:58.4) to advance to the Grand Final on Sunday.

The Junior Varsity 8+ boat was one of only two boats to finish under seven minutes between the two heats. The Zags placed first in their heat race with a time of 6:56.4. San Diego State finished second six seconds later in a time of 7:02.1 and Western Washington was third with a time of 7:15.5. In the second heat, UC Davis finished with the fastest time of the day in 6:52.4. Also advancing to the Grand Final from the second heat was Sacramento State (7:02.2) and the University of Puget Sound (7:16.8).

The Gonzaga Novice 8+ turned in the biggest margin of victory of the day for the second-straight year cruising to a 19-second win in its heat race. The Bulldogs turned in a time of 7:02.0 with UC San Diego running second at 7:21.4. Santa Clara University was third with a time of 7:26.2 to also advance to the Grand Final. Last season the Zag Novice 8+ turned in a 25-second victory in their heat race.
