Bulldogs Reign Over WIRA Championships

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. - The Gonzaga University women's rowing program had a successful end to the 2007 WIRA Championships on Sunday as the Bulldogs won gold in two events and a silver in another. The Zags won the Varsity 8+ race for the second time in three years while the Novice 8+ took top honors for the second-straight season. Placing second and earning a silver medal was the Second Varsity 8+ boat.

The Varsity 8+ boat won its race in a time of 6:43.2, nearly four seconds ahead of second place finisher UC Davis. The Aggies took the silver medal crossing the finish line in a time of 6:47.2. Placing third and earning the bronze medal was Western Washington University in a time of 6:47.7.

The Varsity 8+ boat consisted of Joan Aubry, Kelly Steinhaus, Jessica Kocarnik, Cory Nelson, Hanna McClintock, Katie Atkins, Kelsey Koenig, Nicole Aadland-Lewis, and Whitney Engle. Along with winning the WIRA Championship, the Varsity 8+ also claimed the West Coast Conference Championship on Friday.

The Novice 8+ boat, racing in the WIRA Championships for only the second year, posted the most lopsided Bulldog victory of the day, winning in 6:57.1 to the 7:14.4 of runner-up UC Davis.

The Novice 8+ boat was comprised of Sara Rotar, Chelsie Eddings, Alissa Stempson, Sara Hickman, Kari Sulenes, Katherine Krueger, Elizabeth Moore, Samantha Cekovic, and Rachel Ross. The same rowers also won the Second Varsity 8+ race at the WCC Championships on Friday.

UC Davis and Gonzaga battled for the title in the Second Varsity 8+ race. The Aggies edged out the Bulldogs to earn the victory with a time of 6:55.2. The Zags crossed the finish line three seconds later in a time of 6:58.2.

In the Second Varsity 8+ boat was Melissa Refruerzo, Whitney Patrick, Sierra Tittle, Teagan Towhey, Julie Smetana, Sara Amatuzio, Stephahie Murphy, Maria Fussell, and Jana Holcombe.
