SEATTLE, Wash. - Participating in the Opening Day Regatta, hosted by the University of Washington on Saturday, Gonzaga University women's rowing was victorious in all three races it was entered in. The Bulldogs won the Erickson Cascade Cup and the Open 8+ and Novice 8+ races.
Gonzaga's Varsity 8+, rowing in the Junior Varsity 8+ Erickson Cascade Cup, shocked the host Huskies with a one-second, three-seat victory. The Bulldogs, who defeated UW's Junior Varsity 8+ for the first time, finished the race in a time of 6:56.61. The Husky boat crossed the finish line a split second later in 6:57.70. Western Washington University closed out the race in third with a time of 7:07.83.
In the Bulldogs first race of the day, Gonzaga earned a 13-second victory in the Open 8+. GU finished the race in 6:59.33, while UW's fourth varsity placed second with a time of 7:12.50. Rounding out the race was Western Washington (7:22.16) and Washington's second novice (7:44.91), who finished third and fourth, respectively.
The Novice 8+ was a close race throughout. The Bulldogs were able to overcome the Huskies later surge over the final 500 meters to earn the victory. Gonzaga clocked in with a time of 6:57.59, three seconds faster than Washington who took second with a time of 7:00.42.
Gonzaga will be back in action next Sunday, May 13 when it participates in the Pacific-10 Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
