LONG BEACH, Calif. - With the regular season set to begin on March 3rd, members of the LMU crew team got an early taste of competition at the Long Beach Indoor Rowing Regatta last weekend. Jill Austin won the Open Lightweight women's event, while Landon Storaasli and Mike Winther earned gold medals in their respective events.
With a time of 7:33.0, Austin won the open lightweight women's event, beginning a very successful day for LMU.
The entire men's team was on hand to compete against other athletes from around Southern California. In the novice lightweight men's category the Lions swept the top three spots with freshman Mike Wither earning gold with a time of 6:47.5. Freshmen Patrick Callan (6:56.0) and Dominic Leone (7:01.4) earned silver and bronze respectively.
In the novice men's race, senior John McAndrew brought home the bronze with a time of 6:47.9
Next up was the varsity lightweight men's race with junior Landon Storaasli repeating as the top finisher with a time of 6:42.1. Senior Co-captain Kevin Druffel-Rodriguez was hot on his heels earning silver with a time of 6:44.4.
Rounding out the day for the lions was senior co-captain Tim Santy earning a bronze in the collegiate men's race with a time of 6:20.8.
The Lions next test will be their season-opening race on March 3rd at Ballona Creek when they square off against UCI and SDSU for the Parker Cup.
